I could kick myself for not taking my camera to swimming lessons this evening. I was taking Ty by myself and I thought there would be no use for it since I would be in the pool with him.
BOY WAS I WRONG!
To start off (the camera would not have helped here) there were 2 double Marine helicpoters circling above the pool for the entire lesson. They were flying pretty low and Ty was really excited as they flew over us. He would point and scream and then wave "bye bye" to them each time they went over.
Side note: There has been a lot of air activity in the area these last few days because they've been assessing tornado and flooding damage (Camp Atterbury was hit by a tornado Tuesday night).
Anyway, as we were walking to the car, here came one again. Only this time, I started to freak out (ok, I was a little scared the whole time) because they were SO low. Then, I finally figured out that it was actually landing. Yes- landing right there in the yard of the Columbus community pool-close to about 100 kids. Ty was so excited, I really wish I could have gotten a picture. It landed about 40 yards from where we were standing. As it came down I had to cover our eyes because there was so much debris flying around. Then, it took off. Close call...off to the car again. Oh, wait! Here comes the second one. It also landed in the yard of the pool and then took off again. Ty thought it was so great, but I was scared one would crash. Keith has educated me in the past on how they crash pretty easily- thanks Keith. Anyway, I just kept telling myself, "They must feel pretty confident they're not going to crash since they're doing this in a place full of children!".
Sigh.

Mommy's fright; Little boy's delight!
Wow Jenn. Nice rhyme! I bet you're proud of that one, huh?? Sounds like quite an adventure. Too bad Ty isn't a little older, that'd be quite a story to tell his friends! I wonder what the purpose of them landing and taking off again was...
Story from the local newspaper.
Marines practice helicopter landings in city
Staff Reports
If it sounds a bit like a war zone in Columbus for the next few weeks, that's just the way the U.S. Marines want it.
Military helicopters will practice landings and takeoffs in various Bartholomew County locations, according to Camp Atterbury officials.
The exercise for troops to be deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan in the fall was in full swing Thursday.
They should practice somewhere else, like Edinburgh. We don't like being a pretend war zone here.
I like it when daddy k comments on the blog!
Me too.
Ok, now I feel really bad dissing Edinburgh because the entire town is flooded. Lesson Learned!
